Yooperlite is a fairly durable stone, around 5.5 to 6 on the Mohs scale, but carved details and points can chip if dropped. Dust it with a soft cloth, or rinse it briefly in lukewarm water and dry it right away. Avoid harsh cleaners. To see the glow, use a longwave UV flashlight in a dark room. Does it really glow?
Yes. The sodalite in yooperlite fluoresces orange to yellow under longwave UV light, usually around 365nm. In normal light it looks speckled gray. A UV flashlight is not included.
Is it natural yooperlite?
Yes. It is natural syenite with fluorescent sodalite. The glow is a natural mineral property, not paint or a coating.
How big is it?
It stands about 75mm tall on its carved rock base, a nice size for a shelf or desk.
Will mine look like the photo?
The wolf design is the same, but every carving has its own speckle pattern and glow.
Does it need a stand?
No. The wolf is carved onto a flat rock base and stands on its own.
What Is Yooperlite?
Yooperlite is the trade name for a gray syenite rock rich in fluorescent sodalite. It became famous after glowing stones were found on the Lake Superior shoreline of Michigan in 2017, and similar material, often called flame stone, is now also mined elsewhere and cut into carvings and shapes. In daylight it looks like speckled gray granite. Under longwave UV light, the sodalite lights up in bright orange and yellow, which is the easiest way to tell it apart from ordinary gray stone.
